Online Looper

A free online looper in your browser: record a part, let it repeat, and stack more layers on top with a click track, amp sounds and undo.

Your guitar signal is processed on this device and is never sent. Recordings stay in this tab's memory and are deleted when you leave.

Keyboard: Space record and overdub, P play or stop the loop, U undo, D demo riff.

How to use the online looper

This online looper works like a looper pedal. Press Start input, confirm that you wear wired headphones and allow the input. Then press Record, play a part, and press Record again (it now reads Stop and loop): the part starts repeating at once. Press Overdub to add a layer on top. An overdub records one pass of the loop from the moment you press it, then stops by itself; press Stop overdub to end it early. Undo layer removes the last layer, Clear removes them all, and Play loop stops or restarts playback from the top. Tap a layer under the buttons to mute or unmute it.

No guitar to hand? Play demo riff feeds a short riff into the looper so you can try every button. On a computer, Space records and overdubs, P plays or stops the loop, U undoes and D starts the demo riff.

Loop length, tempo, count-in and click

Loop length decides how long the loop is. Free lets your first take set it: the loop is the time between your two presses of Record. With Click on, a free loop is rounded to whole beats so the click lines up every time round. Choose 1, 2, 4 or 8 bars to record an exact length in 4/4 at the BPM you set: the first take stops by itself at the end of the last bar. Count-in plays one bar of clicks before the first take, so you start on beat one. The click is not recorded. For a full metronome with accents and subdivisions, use the metronome, or loop a beat from the drums.

Sounds: record through an amp or your pedalboard

The Sound list puts an amp between your input and the looper: a clean, crunch or high gain amp, a bass amp, or My pedalboard, the board you last set on the online guitar effects page. The looper records the sound you hear, so a layer keeps its amp and effects even if you switch the sound for the next layer. Hear input turns the live sound in your headphones on or off; recording works either way.

Timing offset: why overdubs can land late

When you play along with a loop, you hear it a little late and your guitar reaches the browser a little late. The Android developer guide on audio latency calls this round-trip latency: input latency plus processing plus output latency. Without a correction, each overdub would sit slightly behind the beat. The Timing offset shifts live recordings earlier by that amount. With Auto on, it uses the latency your browser reports, which leaves out the input side in most browsers. If overdubs still sound late, switch Auto off and raise the offset a few milliseconds at a time. The demo riff is never shifted, because it does not travel through your headphones and microphone.

For the shortest delay, use a computer with a USB audio interface and wired headphones. Avoid Bluetooth: Wikipedia's Bluetooth article gives 100 to 200 ms for classic Bluetooth audio. Plug the guitar into the interface's instrument (Hi-Z) input, as on the online guitar amp page.

Save your loop and your privacy

Save WAV mixes the layers you have not muted into one WAV file. The file is made in this tab and your browser saves it to your device; nothing is uploaded. Recordings stay in this tab's memory only and are deleted when you leave or reload the page, so save the WAV first. The looper keeps up to 12 layers and loops up to 60 seconds long. Practice ideas: loop a chord progression from the guitar chords chart and solo over it with the guitar scales.

Questions

Is the online looper free?

Yes. It runs in the browser with no download and no sign-up.

Can I use the guitar looper online without an audio interface?

Yes, with the built-in microphone for an acoustic guitar or voice. Use headphones, or the microphone will record the loop again and can feed back. For an electric guitar, an audio interface with an instrument input works best.

Why is my overdub out of time?

Latency: you hear the loop late and your playing arrives late. Switch Auto off under Timing offset and raise the offset until the overdub sits on the beat.

Are my recordings uploaded?

No. Every layer stays in this tab's memory and is deleted when you leave. Save WAV saves a file to your own device only.

How long can a loop be?

Up to 60 seconds, with up to 12 layers. A short loop of 1 to 8 bars is easiest to play over.
