Blank chord chart

The blank sheet uses the instrument and tuning chosen above (6 strings for guitar, 4 for ukulele, bass and mandolin, 5 for banjo).

How to use the chord chart maker

This chord chart maker is a chord diagram maker for guitar, ukulele, bass, mandolin and banjo: tap dots onto a blank chord box, and it names the chord, plays it, and adds it to a sheet you can download as a PNG or SVG or print. The chord chart maker starts with one blank box. Pick the Instrument and Tuning first: guitar, ukulele, bass, mandolin or 5-string banjo, in any tuning the site knows (standard, drop D, DADGAD, open G and more for guitar). The box gets the right number of strings, and the string names appear under it.

Tap a fret to place a dot. Tap the same dot again to remove it. Tap the space above the nut to cycle a string through O (open), X (muted) and nothing. Before you place a dot, choose its finger number under Finger number for new dots; tap an existing dot with another number selected to change it. Starting fret moves the box up the neck and prints the fret number beside the first row, and Frets shown sets how tall the box is.

As you place dots the display names the chord and lists its notes, with other names that fit the same notes. The title fills itself in with that name until you type your own. Press Play (or Space) to hear it strummed from the lowest string up.

Barre chords

Turn on Barre tool, then tap the barre fret on the lowest string it covers. The bar runs from there to the highest string. Tap the same fret on another string to shorten or lengthen it, or tap its starting string again to remove it. Strings under the bar that you leave empty sound at the barre fret, so an F shape with a first-fret barre and three dots is named F. The finger number selected when you draw the bar (1 if none) is printed on it.

Build a sheet and download it

Every box lives on Your sheet, below the editor. + New box adds a blank box after the current one, Copy box duplicates it so you can make a variation, and each box on the sheet has buttons to move it left or right or delete it. Tap a box to edit it again. The sheet is saved in this browser, so it is still there when you come back.

Used as a guitar chord diagram generator for lessons or your own notes, the sheet is the finished page. Give it a title, choose how many boxes go in a row, then press Download PNG for an image you can drop into a document or message, Download SVG for a vector file that stays sharp at any size, or Print. Downloads are black on white whatever theme the page is in.

How to read the boxes this tool draws

Each box is a picture of the neck standing up. The vertical lines are the strings, lowest string on the left. The horizontal lines are the frets, and the thick line at the top is the nut. A dot means press that string just behind that fret. An O above the nut means play the string open, an X means do not play it.

The numbers in the dots are fretting-hand fingers. On string instruments the fingers are numbered 1 to 4 from the index finger to the little finger, and guitar music marks the thumb with a T when it frets a bass note. When the box starts higher up the neck, the number beside the first row (for example 5fr) is the fret that row stands for.

Blank chord charts

Need paper instead? Under Blank chord chart choose 12, 20 or 30 empty boxes and press Print blank sheet, or save the page as a PNG or SVG. The empty boxes follow the instrument chosen at the top: six strings for guitar, five for banjo and four for ukulele, bass and mandolin, each with a line above it for the chord name. They suit lessons, songwriting notebooks and working out your own voicings by hand.

Looking for a shape rather than drawing one? The guitar chord finder names any shape you tap on a fretboard, and the guitar chord charts show common voicings. To write out a riff or exercise note by note, use the guitar tab maker.

Questions

How do I make a chord chart?

Choose your instrument, tap the frets on the blank box to place dots, mark open and muted strings above the nut, and add the box to your sheet. Repeat for each chord, then download the sheet as a PNG or SVG or print it.

Does the chord chart maker name the chord for me?

Yes. Every time you place a dot it works out the notes of the strings you play and names the chord, including inversions such as C/E and chords with a missing 5th. The name becomes the box title unless you type your own.

Can I make ukulele, bass, mandolin or banjo chord diagrams?

Yes. Pick the instrument and tuning at the top. The box gets four strings for ukulele, bass and mandolin and five for banjo, and the chord names use that tuning.

How do I show a barre chord?

Turn on the Barre tool and tap the barre fret on the lowest string it covers. The bar reaches to the highest string; tap the same fret on another string to change where it ends.

Can I print a blank chord chart?

Yes. In the Blank chord chart section choose 12, 20 or 30 empty boxes for your instrument and press Print blank sheet, or download it as a PNG or SVG.
