About

Free music practice tools that run in your browser: no sign-up, no app, nothing to install.

What this is

Soundovia is a set of practice tools for people who play or sing: an online piano, tuners for each instrument, chord finders and chord charts, scales, a vocal range test, a metronome and more. Each page is one tool that works on its own, on a phone or a computer.

How the tools work

Everything runs in your browser. Sounds are made on your device with the Web Audio API: the metronome clicks, reference tones, guitar strings and drums are synthesised as you play them. The piano uses recordings (below). Tuners and voice tools listen through your microphone only after you press Start; the sound is analysed on your device, a few times a second, and is never recorded, stored or sent anywhere. The mic test is the one tool that can record: a short clip so you can hear yourself back, kept in the tab's memory and never uploaded. Settings such as your tuning or tempo are saved in your own browser so they are there next time.

How the music facts are checked

Note names, chord spellings, scales, key signatures and tunings all come from one small music theory library that every tool shares, and that library is covered by automated tests: chord names for common guitar shapes, every key signature, the spelling of every scale, and the pitch accuracy of the tuner on test tones from the lowest bass string to the top of the singing range. Chords are spelled the way a musician writes them (Eb G Bb, not D# G A#). If you find a mistake, it is a bug and we want to fix it.
